Presentation Tips PowerPoint
It is always good to have tips on how to create a good PowerPoint presentation. This would also be good to show the students as they begin to make their own PowerPoint presentations.
Research Tutorial
This was a nicely presented review of how to conduct research using EBSCO. They clearly had seen the PowerPoint Tips presentation!
Creating Good PowerPoint Presentations
This is another handy resource when you are creating a PowerPoint presentation. Too often you see a busy background, unreadable font, or too much information presented in a PowerPoint. Last I heard, PowerPoints were considered "old technology" and Prezi's were in...
PowerPoint Slide Master
Too cool! I have always wondered if this was even possible. He is using an older version of Powerpoint though.
Kid Pix and PowerPoint Game Resources
Recently, I added PowerPoint presentations as an option on my American Heroes Choice Boards. Incredibly, all the students wanted to do it - and did fantastic jobs! This would be a great addition to those projects.

EDRD 7718 - Module 5
An Example of Effective Classroom Management
This video explored word work. Unfortunately, I don't think that I was very successful in executing my word work center this year. This video gave me some great ideas of things to do to make my word work work!
What is Literacy, and Why is it Important?
Being literate is so important - I can not imagine not being able to read!
Using Literacy Centers to Strengthen Reading and Writing Instruction
I love centers. I remember when I started teaching four years ago, that I was the first one on my grade level to use centers during my reading block. Our GLC told me that she never used centers during reading because she hadn't been formally trained on them. Now, everyone is doing CAFE and the Daily 5. Oh how far we've come in just four years!
Designs for Balanced Literacy
Wonderful video! She has such a positive attitude and a great classroom set-up!
Spaces and Places
I need to get this book! I have one of the smallest rooms in the school and it has been a challenge arranging my room. I cannot wait to get this book and try it out next year!

Literacy Across the Curriculum
As literacy is vital to every subject and every aspect of life, it is important to integrate it as much as possible. I love this "bookaneer's" approach! I love the thought of carrying a common theme through all of the subjects.
Content Literacy and RTI
With the growing number of ways that our students are introduced to information, it is essential that they know how to read. As a majority of information that they encounter will be expository, it is critical that they are able to dissect informational texts. This makes integrating subjects even more important than ever.
RTI and Adolescent Literacy
This articles challenges the notion that if the RTI strategies don't work, than it's the teacher's fault. It acknowledges that it is a preventative strategy, but addresses how difficult it is to implement at the middle and high school levels (no pressure elementary school teachers!). Lastly the article states that if it's not being used properly, then it's really not helping.
RTI in Georgia PowerPoint
From what I gathered from this PowerPoint is that RTI is a work in progress and that they is no one right way to implement it as of yet. I remember being given a copy of that pyramid. Ours also indicated the percentage of students that should be at each level.
RTI Button Gwinnett Elementary PowerPoint
This PowerPoint for very similiar to the overview that we received in Fulton County. The slide theme made it really hard to read!
RTI: Georgia's Pyramid
I like the quote that acknowledged that academic struggles are normal and should be expected. Unfortunately, nowadays parents see their students struggling as the teacher not doing their job. I tell them - if you student gets an A the first time, I am not challenging them enough!
RTI Advanced PowerPoint
This RTI PowerPoint was much more informative than any other one that I had ever seen! I completely agree that there should be other (faster) ways to identify SLDs so that students can get the support that they need as soon as possible.
RTI Intro Wright
I thought it was interesting that the PowerPoint mentioned that the Test-Score Discrepancy Model was no longer used because it required a student to fail. With having to collect 12 weeks of data, the RTI model kind of does too.
Reading Rainbow New Theme Song
So, it is still on? Love it!
Writing Express with First Graders
I like the kinetic aspect of this lesson - that students are physically representing the parts of the sentence and the punctuation. That would be a great addition to my grammar lessons next year.
Strategic Reading Instruction Powerpoint
This PowerPoint is a great overview of strategic reading instruction. It is also a great review of phonemic awareness, phonics, and the overall alphabetic principle. It kind of reminded me of the the Daily 5 as I was looking through it.
WebQuest
I had never seen a WebQuest before! They seem like they would be really great culminating activity projects. The students could pick how they show-what-they-know.
Phonemic Awareness 3-Tier Model
This PowerPoint made me think about a few students that I have had over the years that still required instruction on phonemic awareness, despite being in the third grade. It also reminded me of the RTI process.
Conquer the Code
I really liked the visual represented on slide 11. Often times, people think that fluency means comprehension - it doesn't! You can be a perfectly fluent reader and not understand a thing you are reading!
Word Study and Vocabulary
Vocabulary is crucial to comprehension! I always preteach unknown vocabulary words to my students before we read so that we encounter them in a text, they understand what they are reading.
Active Reading Strategies

Reading Strategies Vocabulary
I had a Word Wall for a few years, however, I took it down when we adopted our new reading series because the words were completely different. I liked having the Word Wall - perhaps I will have to create a new one next year.
Fluency, Decoding, & Comprehension
This article was very similar to the message in the Conquer the Code PowerPoint. Fluency, decoding, and comprehension are related, but they are not synonymous.
WebQuest Article Wang
Just more motivation to try WebQuests! I saved the page with the links!

EDRD 7718 - Module 3
Encouraging Enthusiasm for Reading Video
Parents can encourage a love of reading in several ways. First, expose them to books at a young age. My husband and I have already bought Veronika several books - and she is not even three months old yet! Second, read to them as children love to hear stories. Veronika is already showing interest in certain books that her grandma is reading to her every day. Lastly, set a good example by reading yourself. Children learn through mimicry. If they see you reading, they will want to read too.
Using the Smart Table for Collaboration Video
Being a gadget person, I totally LOVE this! This would be a great center or even a way for a small group to collaborate on a project. I am curious as to the kinds of programs it comes with and if you can create activities like on an active board. I am definitely going to e-mail my principal!
Field Trip to Atlanta, Georgia
Being a transplant to Georgia, I have not had the opportunity to experience a lot of these things. I can't wait until Veronika is old enough so that we have an excuse to do these things!
Exploring Social Studies and Technology
Still loving that table! I have a few exploratory social studies websites that would be perfect for this type of technology!
Integrating Science and Literacy in Early Childhood
I enjoy integrating science and literacy. I try to make my weekly cold reads to whatever topic we are covering in science/social studies. That way, the students are learning science/social studies without knowing it! The students are also usually very interested in the science/social studies topics, which motivates them to read.

Expository Text Structures and Signal Words
This is a great resource! I am going to print it out and use it as my cheat sheet!
Article - Moss
There has been a push in recent years for students to be exposed to expository texts and their features. I have never thought to have students retell informational texts and, I think that most people would agree, that they associate retelling with narrative text. Moss's method of providing background knowledge, teaching the text structures, and assessment seems like a great way to teach expository text structures.
ARP - Smith
An example action research paper! I wish I had seen this sooner!
Before reading this paper, I made a mental prediction that surely boys would be more inclined to read informational texts based on the selections I have seen my students make. I was surprised to see that both boys and girls choose informational texts equally. It was also interesting to see that the teacher can influence their student's selection. Perhaps it is a good thing that my read-alouds consist of higher level chapter books!

Trip to Brazil
Differentiated instruction calls for us to reach all of our learners in the way they learn best. These videos would be great for visual learners. Videos are also a great way to incorporate technology into your lesson and make those real-world connections for the students.
This virtual trip to Brazil almost made it seem like you were there! What a beautiful place! My dad has been fortunate enough to travel to Brazil, but unfortunately he said it was not safe. As a foreigner, he had to be driven around in an armored-plated car and was not allowed to go anywhere alone. Sad that a place with such beauty is so dangerous.
Goals for Differentiated Instruction Video
This video was a great overview of the goals of differentiated instruction. In my classroom, I often offer Choice Boards to my students at the end of a unit so that they can show what they know in a way that suits their learning style. They love having a choice and sometimes their products truly amaze me!
The Story of Differentiation Video
How fascinating! It is always interesting to find out how something began!
Information Literacy PowerPoint
I enjoyed the biology connection in this PowerPoint - very clever. I definitely feel like we have moved from the "sage on the stage" to the "guide on the side" and it has been a very trying transition for everyone.
Planning Strategic Reading Lessons PowerPoint
This year, my school adopted the Great Habits, Good Readers series. I felt like this PowerPoint was talking about exactly what I do! We start with an objective (standard), pick a text, and then set a purpose for reading. The only thing that this series is weak on is assessments - we have had to create all of our own assessments.
Literacy Content Reading & Scaffolding PowerPoint
Over the past four years, I have noticed that the science and social studies curriculum do prove challenging to my third graders. Part of that, I feel, comes from the vocabulary - especially in social studies. Some of the terms are so abstract that it is hard for the students to come up with a picture in their mind for it. It is crucial here to pre-teach it and provide examples so that you can build that background knowledge for them to use as a stepping stone - the scaffolding graphic showed this perfectly!
Verb Wheel Bloom's Taxonomy
My team has found resources like this to be a great help when coming up with different depth of knowledge questions!

EDRD 7718 - Module 1
Vacca Chapter 14
There is no doubt that textbooks are harder for students than literature. Textbooks introduce new information with unknown words in a strange format. Due to this, textbook readability needs to be taken into consideration before assigning any textbook assignments. To make textbook lessons successful, activating background knowledge, using graphic organizers, and brainstorming are key strategies that teachers should employ.
Exploring Literacy PowerPoint
This PowerPoint reminded me of the benefits of doing author studies. Too often I think that we are rushed to get
through the curriculum and don’t stop to do the activities that really engage
our students.
Reading Rainbow
This
brings back memories! I wish that this
show was still on.
Strategies for Parents of Struggling Readers
This
would be a great video to link to my website for my parents. I really liked viewing the different
strategies that parents could use with their struggling readers. By incorporating movement and game like
activities, the students are sure to stay engaged.
Trip to Hawaii Parts 1, 2, & 3
Graphic
Organizers are a great tool to help students make connections between their existing
knowledge and new knowledge. I like the
variety of graphic organizers presented in these three videos.
Expository Texts
Expository
texts are usually more challenging for students. Students do not know that the text features
present in the text are valuable sources of information and can aid them in
their understanding of the text. I have
a whole bulletin board in my room devoted to text features.
